Levaquin Antibiotic Neuropathy Injury Lawyers and LawsuitsLevaquin (levofloxacin) is a widely-prescribed antibiotic that has recently been linked to a severe form of nerve damage known as peripheral neuropathy (PN). The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about this side effect being reported in certain users of the drug in August 2013. Signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy caused by Levaquin may include pain, burning, numbness, loss of reflexes, and paralysis.

Levaquin is manufactured and marketed by Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson), and is used to treat a wide variety of conditions, such as bacterial and skin infections, pneumonia, and bubonic plague. It was approved in 1996 for sale on the U.S. market, and in 2011 became available as a generic. Over six million prescriptions are written annually for oral Levaquin, and more than one million patients have the drug administered intravenously in an inpatient hospital setting.

Unfortunately, despite being effective at treating the above conditions, Levaquin has recently been found to be linked to peripheral neuropathy, a condition in which severe damage occurs to the nerves between the brain and body. Depending on which nerves are damaged, there are over 1000 distinct forms of PN. General signs and symptoms of Levaquin-induced peripheral neuropathy include:

Change in sensation to light touch, pain, or temperature
Change in sense of body position
Loss of reflexes
Muscle wasting

FDA issued a warning on August 15, 2013 stating that some Levaquin users had been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, and stated the original warnings did not adequately describe the potential rapid onset of PN.
The FDA stated: "In some patients the symptoms had been ongoing for more than a year despite discontinuation of the fluoroquinolone. Several patients were continued on the fluoroquinolone drug despite the occurrence of neuropathic symptoms."

For patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy, the treatment course depends on the nerve damage origin. PN can often be halted or reversed with vitamin therapy and dietary changes if it is caused by a vitamin deficiency, and nerve damage caused by excessive alcohol consumption can be improved by discontinuing alcohol use. Peripheral neuropathies caused by harmful drugs such as Levaquin can often be corrected in much the same way, by quitting the medicaition and seeking alternative treatment methods.
